In India, according to previous studies, 1 in 9 Indians may develop cancer during their lifetime. There are 1.5 million cases of blood cancer around the globe, mostly people over 55 years of age who have developed this type of cancer, but sometimes it is also found in children's age groups. The only chance of survival is a BMT bone marrow transplant, where healthy bone marrow cells are transferred to the patient. It's very hard to find a match donor. Anyone from 18 to 40 years of age can qualify as a bone marrow donor. One can donate bone marrow as many times as he wants. But finding a match is very rare, so you might get called once or twice for donation. The survival rate of patients under 60 year around is 5 year with the remission rate 70 to 80% with 26% of survival. Blood cancer sometimes takes many years to show symptoms. But not every patient good to receive bone marrow transplant, only patients younger than 60 years are eligible.
Chemotherapy protects patients' lives for some time, but after sometimes loses its effects, a complete cure is only possible with bone marrow transplantation. Bone marrow matched with a special blood test for human leukocyte antigen HLA. When they are given a healthy bone marrow, donors recognize and destroy immune cells of some kind of cancer and create a new immune system that will fight existing leukaemia or other cancers that have not been killed by chemotherapy or radiation. Bone marrow may provide a person with bone marrow in remission or complete healing for a lifetime. Transplant is also known as stem cell transplantation. Every day, 200 billion platelets, 200 billion RBC red blood cells and 700 million white cells are produced by a healthy person. The whole process is painless as Anaesthesia is given to the donor before the removal of the stem cell from the back of the pelvic bone. The Donor Recovery Rate is a minimum of two weeks to a maximum of 20 days. The donor may feel some weakness and tiredness in his back for a few days. By donating your stem cells, you can save someone's life and lead them to remission or complete cure.
